Awareness can prevent breast cancer

New Delhi: Lack of awareness is one of the main reasons behind the rising number of breast cancer patients in India, say experts. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, one in 22 Indian women is likely to develop breast cancer.

“Lack of awareness is a major problem we are facing in breast cancer treatments. Women are unaware about symptoms and causes of breast cancer,” P.K. Julka, senior oncologist of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here told IANS Monday.

Experts feel the emphasis needs to be on promoting cancer screening centres in the country.

“Screening procedures in India need to be promoted in rural parts. We hardly have any cancer registration programmes in rural areas, because of which a lot of cases go unnoticed,” Julka added.

“Lifestyle-related disorders such as hormonal imbalance and obesity after menopause also cause the disease. They can come to screening centres at hospitals for check-up,” said Julka.
