Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Thursday said that terrorists are using Kolkata as a safe corridor.
“Terrorists are coming and going through the city. Besides there are also communal forces and big criminals who have to be uprooted,” Bhattacharjee, who is also in-charge of home (police) department, said at a function of the city police here.
Maintaining that the Kolkata Police had less personnel compared to the police-public ratio in cities like Mumbai, he said there were 26,000 personnel in 48 police stations in the city which had a population of over 60 lakh. “This ratio is higher in Mumbai and other metropolises of the country.”
He also said that criminals operating in cities like Mumbai could not commit crimes in Kolkata because of the efficiency of the city police. “It is a credit of the Kolkata Police,” he said.
The chief minister urged citizens to be alert against terrorists, communal forces and criminals operating in the metropolis.
Altogether, 48 police personnel and 16 civilians were awarded under different categories at the function for their courage and dedication to the service.
