UN rights chief welcomes Nobel for Chinese dissident

Geneva: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay welcomed Friday the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

“We welcome this recognition of the very important role human rights defenders play in China, and in many other countries, as well as the challenges they face,” Navi Pillay said.

She also praised such activists for “the courage they so often show in speaking up for what they believe in”.

Liu is the first citizen of China to receive the peace prize.
