New Delhi : The Delhi Police has informed Delhi High Court that more than 1,000 missing children in the city have been rescued by them in the past one year.
Submitting an action taken report before a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan, Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said that 1,111 children were rescued since September last year.
Police also submitted before the court that they have booked those involved in the commission of various offences under the Indian Penal Code, Bonded Labour Act and Abolition of Child Labour Act and Juvenile Justices Act and trials are pending in the courts of the metropolitan magistrate.
Taking cognisance of a media report that every day more than 15 children go missing from Delhi and police have failed to maintain data and a record of cases, the court had directed police to register FIRs and not to harass the parents.
The direction also said that if the police came across a child who was unable to provide information about his/her parentage and address, all police stations shall register criminal cases to ascertain parentage and address of the child. Also the court said that police should keep a record on the circumstances under which the child got separated from family and involvement of any organised criminal gang.
The bench Sep 16 last year had directed the police to register FIRs immediately after receipt of the complaint from the victim’s family and the information should be uploaded on its website.
The bench had also asked the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to constitute a team of lawyers and police personnel to provide legal assistance to the parents running from pillar to post to register a case of their missing children with the police.
