While schools and colleges functioned and city buses plied normally across the state, workers in the textile belt of Tirupur and Coimbatore took part in the strike.

Around three lakh workers in hosiery units in Tirupur and workers in textile mills in Coimbatore actively participated in the protest called by the central trade unions.

In Tiruchirappali, around 4,000 workers at the Golden Rock railway unit struck work.

Buses to Kerala were stopped at the state border; there were also no buses to Tamil Nadu from that state.

The strike has been called against rising prices, privatisation and violation of labour laws and for a new pension scheme.
