Mumbai : A benchmark index for Indian equities Tuesday closed 85 points higher than its previous close, slipping below the day’s highs and bucking gloomy trends in European markets.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,571.73 points, closed at 18,645.06 points, 85.01 points or 0.46 percent up from its previous close at 18,560.05 points.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty shut shop 0.49 percent higher at 5,604 points.
Broader market indices ended mixed, with the BSE midcap closing a meagre 0.09 percent up and the BSE smallcap index 0.62 percent higher.
Capital goods, IT, metals and telecom scrips saw healthy buys. Realty, healthcare and banking stocks came under selling pressure.
The market breadth is positive with 1,664 scrips advancing, compared to 1,282 stocks declining and 127 remaining unchanged.
The major gainers on the Sensex were ACC, up 6.67 percent at Rs.962.70; L&T, up 2.33 percent at Rs.1,876.25; TCS, up 1.89 percent at Rs.869.25; and Jaiprakash Associates, up 1.67 percent at Rs.118.60.
There were only four losers on the 30-scrip Sensex: Hindustan Unilever, down 0.9 percent at Rs.269; SBI, down 0.81 percent at Rs.2,835.55; HDFC Bank down 0.62 percent at Rs.2,192, and Tata Power down 0.62 percent at Rs.1,270.
Other Asian markets ended trade on a mixed note, with traders taking a breather after Monday’s rally.
The Japanese Nikkei closed 0.81 percent lower at 9,226 points.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended a modest 0.22 percent up at 21,401.79 points. The Chinese Shanghai Composite index closed on a flat note at 2,698.36 points.
European bourses started in the red after a report in the Wall Street Journal said some Euro zone banks had exposure to high risk government debt.
At the closing bell here, the FTSE 100 was trading 0.94 percent lower at 5,387.8 points.
The German DAX was ruling 0.75 percent down at 6,109.1 points and the French CAC 40 fell 1.25 percent lower at 3,638.77 points.
