Sensex rallies further while world bourses take a breather

Mumbai : A benchmark index for Indian equities maintained its the upward march Wednesday, closing 155 points higher on sustained capital inflows, even as most global bourses traded sideways.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,343.74 points, closed at 19,502.11 points, 155.15 points or 0.8 percent up from its previous close at 19,346.96 points.

The Sensex has gained over 702 points or 3.73 percent in the first three days of the trading week.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty shut shop 1.13 percent higher at 5,860.95 points.

Broader markets indices gave up its early gains. The BSE midcap closed flat and the BSE smallcap index 0.09 percent lower.

The market breadth was negative with 1,253 scrips advancing, compared to 1,702 stocks declining and 136 remaining unchanged.

IT, energy and telecom scrips were among the major gainers, while auto stocks saw some selling.

The major gainers on the Sensex were Infosys, up 2.49 percent at Rs.3,050.15; RIL, up 2.3 percent at Rs.1,010.45; Wipro, up 2.25 percent at Rs.426.85; and TCS, up 2.18 percent at Rs.913.60.

Among the losers were: Tata Motors, down 2.86 percent at Rs.1,024.30; SBI, down 1.7 percent at Rs.3,060.65; ACC, down 1.14 percent at Rs.959.80, and Jaiprakash Associates, down 1.03 percent at Rs.124.95.

According to data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have poured in over $1.55 billion during September alone, with almost half of that amount coming on Sep 13 and 14.

Trading in other Asian markets was mixed. The Japan’s Nikkei gained 2.34 percent to shut shop at 9,516.56 points after the government announced its first currency intervention since 2004 with the Japanese central bank selling yen and buying the US dollar.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was ended 0.14 percent up at 21,725.64 points.

The Chinese Shanghai Composite index, was down 1.34 percent at 2,652.5 points.

European bourses were trading on a sluggish note.

At the closing bell here, the FTSE 100 was trading 0.24 percent lower at 5,554.23 points.

The German DAX was ruling 0.36 percent down at 6,253.06 points and the French CAC 40 slipped 0.46 percent to rule at 3,757.09 points.
