Chandigarh: Former external affairs minister K. Natwar Singh Monday said the “mess” around the Commonwealth Games has tarnished India’s image.
“After winning the bid, India had nearly seven years to complete their preparations for the Games. But they have failed to live up to the expectations of millions of people. This mess has tarnished the image of India all across the world,” Singh told reporters here.
Singh’s comments followed widespread criticism within and outside India on the shoddy work at the Games Village where thousands of athletes from 71 countries and territories are expected to stay.
“Now all eyes are on our sportspersons. They should try to win the maximum medals for India to compensate for this humiliation. Only then will people get some positive things to talk about the Games, otherwise the situation will get worse from here,” said Singh.
Natwar Singh was here to attend a national seminar. The Games will be held in New Delhi Oct 3-14.
