Mumbai clubs go for Wankhede ambience

Mumbai : Set to make match-watching an experience, several clubs in Mumbai have arranged for big screens and free food and drinks for members and their guests for Saturday’s India-Sri Lanka cricket World Cup final.

As the city reaches the peak of excitement ahead of the Cup finale between India and Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium Saturday, clubs have gone an extra mile to create a Wankhede ambience for members who are looking forward to enjoy the match amidst food, fun and family.

“We have installed four giant screens for our members. We also have culled out an interesting mix of various cuisines and drinks for our 6,000 strong member base,” said Vijay Saini, director of the Green Court Club on the city’s outskirts.

For sports enthusiasts the Goregaon Sports Club (GSC) located in suburban Malad has arranged for a big screen in the open space of the club where members can come with guests and enjoy an uninterrupted finale.

“We are expecting a crowd of around 700 people,” a GSC office bearer told IANS.

For those who anticipate to celebrate India’s victory in south Mumbai, close to the madness at the stadium, the Bombay Presidency Radio Club has arranged for two giant screens at its lounge and thee LCD screens at their bar.

“Each member can bring along eight guests. We also have a good mix of a variety of cuisines and drinks to add to the ambience,” said the duty officer at the club.

Several other clubs like Country Club in Andheri, Venus Sports Academy in Goregaon and MIG Cricket Club in Bandra have chalked out similar plans for members and their families.

For the scribes, the Press Club of Mumbai has arranged for two giant screens to view “the clash of the titans”.

“It is a not to be missed, historic clash. Apart from the two giant screens, we have also arranged for a couple of plasma screens in the premises,” said Press Club’s Secretary Sunil Shivdasani.

“Live food counter on the terrace serving snacksand mouth-watering chicken and mutton Biryani will added to the ambience,” he added.

And for the multiplex lovers, Cinemax has arranged for 15 screens across locations in Mumbai.

“We had seen a tremendous turnout during our screening of the India-Pakistan semifinal,” said Sunil Punjabi, CEO of Cinemax India.

“We are expecting a 95 percent turnout for the finale,” he added.
