Hundreds of his devotees rushed to the Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences after rumours spread that Sai Baba died while undergoing treatment.

Officials of Sathya Sai Central Trust have denied rumours. However, there is no update on his health condition. A medical bulletin is likely to be issued in the afternoon.

Angry devotees of Sai Baba even roughed up crew of some television channels outside the hospital, accusing them of spreading rumours.

Some devotees broke down while speaking to a channel over phone after reports that Sai Baba’s condition had deteriorated.

The 85-year-old godman remained in hospital in the pilgrim town of Puttaparthi in Anantapur district since March 28. He was admitted due to pneumonia and breathing problem.

Doctors who implanted a permanent pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat had claimed that his condition was fast improving.

Sai Baba, whose real name is Sathyanarayana Raju, had claimed in 1940 that he was an ‘avatar’ of god.

He became famous with his miracles but for last two decades he had been focusing on social and charitable work.
