Cairo : Egypt has frozen the bank accounts of several former officials and their families, as part of the anti-corruption campaign since the ouster of president Hosni Mubarak.
The officials include former speaker of the Shoura Council Safwat el-Sherif, former speaker of the People’s Assembly Fathi Sorour, former presidential cabinet chief Zakaria Azmi and former housing minister Mohamed Ibrahim Suliman, along with their wives and children, Xinhua reported citing the official MENA news agency.
The ministry of justice had earlier ordered a travel ban on the officials and their families.
Investigations showed that they had exploited their high positions and influence as part of the inner circle of the former president to accumulate enormous wealth, MENA said.
Egyptian caretaker Prime Minister Essam Sharaf has vowed to fight corruption to meet the demands of protesters.
