Chandigarh : Two Punjab Police officers have been booked after Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal ordered a criminal case against them for allegedly showing disrespect to the turban of a Sikh agitator in Mohali last week, a government spokesman said here Tuesday.
A case under Section 295-A (causing hurt to religious sentiments) has been registered against Superintendent of Police Pritam Singh and Sub-Inspector Kulbhushan Sharma. Badal, who is also Punjab’s home minister, had ordered the immediate suspension of and a magisterial inquiry against the erring officials.
Both officers were caught on camera while they were removing the turban of a Sikh man who was protesting with other pharmacists in Mohali town, 10 km from here, March 28.
The order to register the case was made following an inquiry conducted by Mohali additional deputy commissioner M.S. Kainth. The inquiry relied on video footage of the turban removing incident posted on YouTube.
The Punjab government has also asked the state chief secretary to submit a preliminary enquiry report into the incident within two days.
