Shillong : A Meghalaya government official arrested on charges of accepting a bribe was Wednesday remanded in two days’ police custody by a local court, an official said.
Meghalaya Police Tuesday arrested Langstar Kharkongor, a block development officer, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000 for releasing a payment of Rs.5 lakh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
He was sent to police custody for two days by the chief judicial magistrate here.
“We had got a complaint against the official from chairman of a village employment council Chandra Lyngdoh Nongbri, accusing the block official of demanding Rs.50,000 for releasing a payment of Rs.5 lakh,” M. Kharkrang, superintendent of police (Shillong), told IANS.
Police laid a trap and arrested the official while he was accepting Rs.45,000.
Kharkrang said the complainant had earlier paid Rs.5,000 March 31 to Kharkongor.
“We have registered a case against the officer under the Prevention of Corruption Act,” said the police official.
