Washington : A majority of Americans disapprove of President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy and the budget deficit, according to a poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center.
Pew surveyed 1,507 adults during the period March 30-April 3.
While 56 percent of respondents gave a thumbs down to Obama’s economic management, 59 percent were unhappy with his approach to the deficit.
The population is also growing more pessimistic about the economy, even though unemployment has been edging downward for the past few months.
The percentage of people describing current economic conditions as poor rose from 42 percent in February to 53 percent in the latest survey, Pew said.
Obama’s overall approval slipped from 51 percent in March to 47 percent in the latest poll.
Respondents also expressed alarm about rising prices.
Sixty-nine percent said the hike in gasoline prices has a big effect on their household finances, and 58 percent had the same response to a question about the prices of food and consumer goods.
