Blast in Nigeria’s poll office kills eight

Lagosril : At least eight people were killed in a deadly blast at an electoral commission office in Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan said.

The blast occurred Friday in Niger state’s Suleja town, northwest of the capital city of Abuja, just a day ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections.

The polls are scheduled for April 9, April 16 and April 26, CNN reported.

Xinhua said that in another incident, gunmen attacked a police station where electoral officials were storing vote materials in northeastern Nigeria, killing four.

The president has ordered an immediate increase in security on the eve of parliamentary polls.

Human Rights Watch has estimated that at least 85 people have been killed in political violence in the run-up to the elections.
