Washington : US House Speaker John Boehner Friday night announced Republicans has reached a last minute spending deal with the White House and Congressional Democrats, averting an ugly government shutdown one hour before the current stopgap measure expires.Boehner said he expects a vote on the long-term funding bill next week. He said the House will vote later in the night to pass a stopgap bill in order to get the government through next Thursday, Xinhua reported.
Boehner presented the bipartisan deal to avert a government shutdown to members of his caucus Friday evening. He informed his colleagues of the details and asked them to pass a three to six day stop-gap measure to keep the government funded.
Speaking from the White House, President Barack Obama said the deal was the largest spending cuts in US budget history, representing some $78.5 billion cuts to his 2011 budget proposal.
Senate Democratic Leader John Reid later made a statement from the Senate chamber. In addition to the cuts, he said, the two sides also reached an agreement on policy riders, which include controversial provision to de-fund health group Planned Parenthood and eliminate funding for family planning services.
The Senate later passed the stopgap bill with a voice vote, and the House is expected to follow suit.
