Lucknow : The Uttar Pradesh government should pay imams (clerics) in the state a monthly salary of Rs.8,000, the Imam Council of India said Wednesday, adding it will move the court if this was not done.
“There are around 3 lakh imams across Uttar Pradesh. They are not getting a single penny from the state government.
“For raising the living standards of imams, we demand that the Uttar Pradesh government must take immediate steps and provide a monthly salary to them,” Council chairman Quari Hifzur Rehman told the media.
“Like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, the government in Uttar Pradesh also must make provisions for giving a monthly salary,” he added.
