Chandigarh : The Haryana government Wednesday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to immediately restore its “legitimate share” of the Yamuna river water.
In a communication to his Uttar Pradesh counterpart, Haryana Irrigation and Finance Minister Ajay Singh Yadav said that areas of south Haryana were being denied their rightful share of water from the Okhla barrage near south Delhi.
He said the denial of the rightful share has made the districts of Faridabad, Palwal, Mewat and parts of Gurgaon, all in south Haryana, suffer.
Yadav added that the scarcity of water has led to the depletion of area under irrigation in these districts and a drop in agricultural production.
Yadav pointed out that the Haryana territory channels were getting significantly less Yamuna water than the state’s share.
“It is requested that the legitimate share of the state may kindly be ensured for the farming community of Haryana,” Yadav said in his letter.
An agreement, signed May 12, 1994, governs the allocation of Yamuna water at the Tajewala and Okhla barrages to the beneficiary states – Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.
