“We are quite serious about rehabilitation of the athlete. All financial assistance will be given, it includes a suitable job,” Railway Board chairman Vivek Sahai told reporters here.

Arunima Sinha, a 23-year-old athlete, lost her left leg and sustained serious head injuries after she was pushed out of Padmavat Express train by three unidentified goons trying to rob her near Bareilly Monday night.

She was travelling to Delhi from Lucknow to appear for an examination to get a job in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

Sahai said Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is busy in campaigning for West Bengal assembly elections, has expressed her concerns over the “unfortunate incident” and ordered the authorities to provide all possible financial assistance to the athlete.

The sports ministry has also increased its compensation for the athlete from Rs.25,000 to Rs.2 lakh.

Talking to reporters here Thursday, union Sports Minister Ajay Maken said his ministry would provide all possible help and increase the compensation to Rs.2 lakh.

The sports ministry had announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs.25,000 Wednesday.

Arunima Sinha, admitted in a hospital in Bareilly, had expressed her dissatisfaction over the “small compensation” and demanded a permanent government job.
