German FM to head to Egypt and UAE for political talks

Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is to embark on a two-day visit to Egpyt and the United Arab Emirates for political talks later in the day, a spokesman for the foreign ministry told journalists here Monday.

On Tuesday, Westerwelle will meet in Cairo with Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and his Egpytian counterpart Nabil Al-Arabi as well as representatives of the National Human Rights Council.

Talks are expcted to focus on the preparations for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in Egypt and the drafting of a new constitution in the Arab country.

Meanwhile, the German minister will head to the UAE capital Abu Dhabi where he will attend the meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union and the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council.

The talks in Abu Dhabi will be overshadowed by the ongoing lethal security crackdown in Bahrain and the continuing occupation of the Persian Gulf kingdom by Saudi and UAE forces.

This will be Westerwelle’s 10th trip to the Near and Middle East region since 2009.
