Agartala : Indian Chakma tribals have urged Dhaka to protect the rights of their fellow tribals in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in Bangladesh, tribal leaders said here Tuesday.
According to the leaders, at least five people, including a woman, from the ethnic Buddhist minority Chakma were killed following a land dispute in Khagrachari district Sunday.
“Muslim settlers went to the mountainous regions Sunday and began planting banana saplings after clearing the tribal forest land,” Northeast India Chakma Association (NICA) general secretary Sanjit Chakma told reporters.
According to him, more than 200 houses of tribals were burnt down by the attackers.
“We have sent urgent letters to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Indian government to stop the attacks immediately and take action against the attackers,” Chakma said.
