Charge-sheeting Kanimozhi a belated move: Opposition parties

By IANS,

Chennai : The charge-sheeting of Kanimozhi, daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.Karunanidhi, by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday in the 2G spectrum scam is a belated move, Tamil Nadu opposition parties said.

“It is a late move due to political reasons like the just concluded assembly elections in the state,” T.K. Rangarajan, member of parliament from the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), told IANS Monday.

He agreed with the view that the scales would have tilted in favour of the opposition had the CBI filed the charge sheet before the April 13 assembly elections.

About the impact of the CBI move on the relationship between the DMK and the Congress, Rangarajan said: “It all depends on how the case proceeds in the court. The DMK needs the Congress more than the other way around.”

According to him, the Congress knows how to manage the numbers and will not be bothered much even if the DMK withdraws support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Panruti S. Ramachandran, DMDK leader, said: “The Congress is misusing the CBI for its own political ends. After all it is evident that Kalaignar TV was a beneficiary in the 2G spectrum scam. The Congress waited till the assembly elections got over in Tamil Nadu to file the charge sheet.”

He said the Congress will try to gain mileage in the West Bengal elections by saying that it is proceeding against corruption.

“Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu, who owns 60 percent stake in Kalaignar TV, should have also been included in the charge sheet,” Ramachandran said.

“The DMK is a toothless tiger now. It needs the Congress more than Congress needs it,” Ramachandran added.

Political commentator Cho Ramaswamy told IANS: “The DMK has to digest this. It cannot afford offending the central government. They need the support of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the protector of all corruption in India.”

“There are several branches of the Karunanidhi family. If the DMK loses the elections, then the blame will be on Rajathi (Karunanidhi’s third wife) and their daughter Kanimozhi,” Ramaswamy added.

Both the ruling DMK and the principal opposition party AIADMK maintained a studied silence on the developments.

“I don’t want to comment now. I am not even a director in Kalaignar TV,” Kanimozhi told IANS when asked to comment on her being named as co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam.

The CBI Monday named five people, including Kanimozhi, as co-accused in the case involving the award of second generation (2G) phone spectrum.
