Pretoria : The Judicial Service Commission of South Africa has called for more women and black people to apply for judicial vacancies, the official BuaNews reported. .
The commission announced earlier this week the names of candidates it had recommended to President Jacob Zuma for various vacant judge positions.
It said that of the 31 candidates shortlisted for the vacancies, only nine were women. Of the nine women interviewed, only three were recommended to Zuma for appointment.
The commission said the country’s judiciary needs to reflect broadly the racial and gender composition of South Africa when judicial appointments are made.
Hence, more women and black candidates should make themselves available for these positions, state-run news agency BuaNews said.
