Talking in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said talks with Hamas remained a taboo for his country as long as the Palestinian resistance group ‘questions Israel’s right to exist.’

He vowed to thoroughly study the Palestinian unity deal and to coordinate its stance with other allies.

Westerwelle reaffirmed Berlin’s opposition to Palestinian plans to seek UN recognition for a unilateral declaration of statehood this September without
waiting for a negotiated settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to reportedly pressure Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas to reverse his plans for a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state when he visits Berlin on May 5.

Abbas has made clear there won’t be any Palestinian’s concessions as long as
Israel did not move on the issue of settlements in the occupied territories. Germany has earlier this month rejected a unilateral recognition of the alestinian state following intense presssure by the Zionist regime.

Speaking at a joint press briefing in Berlin with the prime minister of the Zionist regime, Benjamin Netanyahu, on April 7, Merkel said, ‘unilateral recognitions are in no way whatever a help to move towards’ a two state-solution.

‘This is our stance today and will be in September,’ she added.

The latest developments notwithstanding, the Palestinian leadership has increasingly found additional support for its position among European nations, including on the issue of settlements.

After the UN vote on settlement building, Britain, France and Germany even issued an additional statement, condemning continued Israeli construction on occupied land.

The statement also called for peace talks with ‘clear parameters,’ with the goal of a deal based on the 1967 borders and a ‘just, fair and agreed solution to the (Palestinian) refugee question.’
