Economic census planned to assess reforms

New Delhi : The government Thursday said it plans to carry out an economic census next year to assess the impact of economic reforms on various industries and to formulate policies better.

“The census would not only provide updated frame for detailed follow-up surveys but would also give entrepreneurial data at village and ward level for planning and development, especially for unorganized sector,” Srikant Jena, minister of state for statistics and programme implementation, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The census, which is the sixth such activity to be undertaken, will assess field work being done by the ministry from January to June of 2012, in collaboration with the state and union territory (UT) governments.

“The ministry plans to release the quick results within 60 days of completion of field work by the states and UTs and the all-India report within one year of completion of field work,” Jena said.
