Pakistan wants enduring partnership with US: Gilani

Islamabad : Pakistan wants to have an enduring partnership with the US, and the relationship should go beyond cooperation on terrorism, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told US Senator John McCain Saturday.

“We look forward to a deeper level of engagement with the US in all areas of our bilateral relations, including energy, social sector and economic cooperation,” Gilani was quoted as saying by Online news agency.

In the meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, Gilani appreciated McCain’s continued support to Pakistan in the US Congress.

McCain, who is a member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, acknowledged that relations between the two nations had seen difficult times in the past.

He said the US considers Pakistan as an important country, and that it was not in the US’s interest to abandon Pakistan.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter and Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik were also present in the meeting.
