Troops of the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles (RR) had surrounded a forest area in Dard Haji in the upper reaches of Handwara in north Kashmir and mounted searches Sunday evening, during which separatist guerrillas opened fire at search parties, a senior police officer said.

“The fire was returned, triggering an encounter in which one woman identified as Saleema and her husband Abdul Rashid Paswal, were injured. They were evacuated to hospital where Saleema succumbed to injuries”, the officer said.

He said Paswal received a bullet injury in his arm and was undergoing treatment.

The officer said the gunfight was still on in the area.

Security forces had last week gunned down 12 infiltrating guerrillas in the Gurez sector of north Kashmir’s Bandipore district.
