Thiruvananthapuram: The judicial commission, led by District Judge K Ramakrishnan appointed by the state government, began hearing in the Beemapalli police firing case yesterday. Adv Celine Wilfred argued for the police that the firing was essential to restore peace in the area.
Adv Celine reportedly said that the public and the state government criticised the police for doing their duty and it diminished the morale of the force. She also mentioned that all had congratulated the police action in Marad, Shakthikulangara etc to avoid communal clashes, but t did not happen in the case of Beemapalli-Cheriyathura.
The next hearing in the case will take place on August 26. Adv Muhammed Salih will represent the victims of the police firing.
Six persons lost their lives in the police firing that took place in Beemapalli in Thiruvananthapuram on May 17, 2009. There have been some clashes between the people of Muslim-majority Beemapalli and Christian-dominated Cheriyathura. The involvement of a goon named Kompu Shibu from Cheriyathura added to the problems which the police failed to control. The clashes then led to the firing which killed six people from Beemapalli. Four policemen were suspended from service following the brutal incident. The collection of evidence in the case by the judicial commission was completed on Thursday, according to reports.
