New Delhi : Despite a series of discussions and requests, Mauritius has shown “unwillingness” to amend a tax treaty with India, Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam told parliament Tuesday.
“Six rounds of discussions have taken place so far. There is unwillingness on the part of Mauritius to cooperate,” Palanimanickam said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
He said India and Mauritius have been negotiating the amendment for the last five years but it was not clear when the revised treaty would be signed.
A joint working group comprising members of the governments of India and Mauritius was set up in 2006 to amend the treaty and put in place adequate safeguards to prevent misuse of the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Convention.
Palanimanickam said India has proposed a next round of discussion to which Mauritius is yet to respond.
