Melbourne world’s most liveable city; Mumbai fares poorly

Melbourne : Melbourne has pipped 139 other cities to be judged the best city in the world to live in, while India’s commercial hub Mumbai was way below at 116th, according to a latest survey.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Survey gave Melbourne a score of 97.5 percent.

Austria’s Vienna was second while Canada’s Vancouver was third.

Other Australian cities in the top 10 include Sydney, ranked sixth, while Perth and Adelaide were joint eighth, The Age reported Tuesday.

Among other top cities, Toronto was ranked fourth, Helsinki seventh, Paris 16th and Tokyo 18th.

The cities were scored on political and social stability, crime rates and access to quality health care. The survey also measured the diversity and standard of cultural events and the natural environment, education (school and university) and the standard of infrastructure, including public transport.

Greek capital Athens dropped to 67th, while Libyan capital Tripoli dived to 135th.

Hong Kong was ranked 31st, San Francisco came in at 51st, as did Singapore, with both narrowly pipping London at 53rd and New York at 56th.

The giant Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai came in at 72nd and 79th.

The worst places to live among the 140 locations were Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh’s Dhaka and Zimbabwe’s Harare.
