Ranchi: BJP workers staged a protest against the decision allowing 51 percent FDI in retail when union Coal Minister Shriprakash Jaiswal’s convoy was leaving the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) office here Thursday.
“We demonstrated in front of Jaiswal to lodge our protest against FDI in retail sector. The central government should understand the feelings of the common people,” said a BJP worker who participated in the demonstration.
The nationwide shutdown called to protest FDI in retail sector got a good response in Jharkhand Thursday. Shops were closed in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro districts. BJP workers took out a protest march in Ranchi and enforced the shutdown.
Besides BJP, the workers of Janata Dal-United, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantric (JVM-P) and others came out on the streets to enforce the shutdown.
“Our party opposes FDI in retail sector. It will push our country towards economic slavery,” Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, a JVM-P leader told IANS.
Hundreds of BJP and other party workers were arrested as a preventive measure in Ranchi and other districts.
The Federation of Jharkhand Chambers of Commerce and Industry which has supported the shutdown claimed that it was successful.
