Indirect tax collection rises 17 percent

New Delhi : Indirect tax collection increased 16.8 percent to Rs.2,52,544 crore in the first eight months of the current financial year, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) chairman S.K. Goel said Friday.

Collections from excise duty rose by 9.3 percent to Rs.94,441 crore in April-November period, while collections from customs duties jumped by 15.2 percent to Rs.1,00,062 crore.

Talking to reporters here, Goel said considering the trend so far, the government was hopeful of meeting the indirect tax collection target of over Rs.4 lakh crore during the current financial year despite the slowdown in industrial output.

“I am optimistic of achieving the revised indirect tax targets of over Rs.4 lakh crore,” Goel said.

In November, indirect tax collection increased by 6.36 percent Rs.31,082 crore year-on-year.
