Srinagar: High tension gripped the old city areas of Srinagar Wednesday evening as the news spread about the death of a local young man beaten by some stone-pelters.
Tariq Ahmad Bhat, 25, was beaten by stone-pelters in the Gojwara neighbourhood of the old city on December 3, 2011, when he refused to shut down his shop in response to a separatist-called shutdown. He was reportedly hit on the head with a cricket bat. Tariq was admitted to a local hospital where he battled for life for the last eleven days.
As the news about the youth’s death spread in the area, shopkeepers shut their shops and gathered at his residence in Rangar Hamam locality.
Tariq’s body was handed over to his family by police in the evening.
Around 400 mourners gathered to attend his burial.
“Police have already registered a case in this incident and four stone-pelters have been arrested for the killing of the shopkeeper,” a senior police officer said here.
