Raipur : Several families belonging to the poverty-hit Baiga tribe in Chhattisgarh were hit by bauxite mining operations of aluminium major Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco), Chief Minister Raman Singh said Thursday.
“In Kabirdham district, Baiga tribes were displaced by Balco’s bauxite mining activities but the government has properly rehabilitated at least seven such tribal families,” Singh said in a written reply in the house.
He said the Korba town-based Balco mines bauxite in Kabirdham district to send to its Orissa-based alumina plant and then brings the alumina back to Korba for aluminium production.
In reply to another question, Labour Minister Chandrasekhar Sahu informed the house in a written reply that 44 workers were killed in Raigarh district at various plants between April 1, 2004 and Nov 30, 2011.
