Washington : Nehru Place market in New Delhi has been listed by the United States among 30 notorious markets that are reportedly engaged in piracy and counterfeiting and deal in such goods and services.
“Nehru Place is reportedly one of the many markets in major cities throughout India that are known for dealing in large volumes of pirated software, pirated optical media containing movies and music, and counterfeit goods,” the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a new report.
The Out-of-Cycle Review of Notorious Markets report identifies more than 30 markets that typify the problem of marketplaces that deal in goods and services that infringe on intellectual property rights (IPR) and help to sustain global piracy and counterfeiting.
The results identify examples of both Internet and physical marketplaces that have been the subject of enforcement action connected with counterfeiting and piracy, or that may merit further investigation for possible IPR infringements, it said.
Also listed are the Urdu Bazaars in Karachi and Lahore which “reportedly remain the main sources of pirated books in the country, though book piracy is widespread and extends beyond such bazaars”.
The China Small Commodities Market in Yiwu, Lo Wu Commercial Centre on the border between Shenzhen and Guangzhou provinces, and Hong Kong and PC Malls operating 22 stores across China also figure in the list.
