Aligarh : Development should depend on resources, capacities and needs of the local population rather than dictated by forces of globalisation, social activist Medha Patkar said Monday.
Delivering the second K.P. Singh Memorial Lecture on ‘People, Development and Globalisation’ at the Aligarh Muslim University, she said topics like Sensex and GDP had overshadowed the more important issue of development of the common man.
She said the right to livelihood is not guaranteed since liberalisation and globalisation had halted the people’s movement.
Patkar added that besides the poverty line, there is a need to demarcate the “amiri rekha” (rich line) as well.
