4.5 % sub-quota unscientific: MES

By TCN Staff reporter,

Kozhikode: Muslim Educational Society (MES) President Dr Fasal Gafoor termed, the UPA government’s decision to allocate 4.5 percent sub-quota for minority within the 27 percent OBC quota as unscientific. Though not willing to doubt the intensions of UPA government on this regard; practically the reservation won’t help those minorities concerned, he said.

He said Muslims in whole are extremely backward economically, educationally and socially. So it is against the logic of reservation to ask them to share a mere 4.5 percentage along with those minority communities like Christians and Sikhs who are way ahead of Muslims taking these aspects in to account. He brought in to notice the fact that, excluding a few rich elite class Muslims in Hyderabad, Delhi and Lucknow, most others are extremely backward.

He said in Kerala, 25 percent of the total population is Muslims and the state government has given a 12 percent reservation to them and Andhra too have set an ideal through total reservation to Muslims irrespective of whether they are backward or not. So India having a total Muslim population of 14 percent, should be following either of these set examples for ensuring reservations on a population basis, he added.
