A head constable of the BSF’s 2nd battalion shot dead a constable inside their camp near the Awantipore Air Force Station Friday afternoon, a senior police officer told IANS.

“Following some altercation, a head constable of BSF’s 2nd Battalion shot and killed a constable today (Friday). The head constable has been taken into custody for interrogation,” the police officer said.

This is the second incident of fratricidal killing by the paramilitary forces in the valley this week.

Earlier, an irate trooper of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) killed three of his colleagues and critically wounded another in a shootout inside a camp in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Incidents of such fratricidal killings have occurred many times in the state during the last two decades.

Counsellors engaged to address the menace have blamed long duty hours under hostile conditions, continued separations from families and lack of recreational facilities as reasons for these individual flare-ups.
