Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle here Wednesday strongly condemned violent crackdown on anti-Mubarak protesters in Cairo, branding it ‘unacceptable.’
‘Violent suppression of protests is not acceptable for Germany and the international community,’ Westerwelle was quoted as saying in a statement.
He urged the Egyptian security forces ‘not to use violence against
demonstrators.’
Westerwelle whose remarks came after a telephone conversation with Egyptian opposition figure Mohammad El Baradei, called on the Mubarak regime to rein in the actions of what he called ‘thugs.’
Armed goons supporting Mubarak attacked peaceful protesters at Cairo’s Tahrir Square earlier in the day, causing mayhem and chaos.
A close ally of Germany in the Middle East, Egypt has been the scene of deadly mass demonstrations against the Mubarak regime over the past days.
Berlin had so far been a strong backer of Mubarak over what it said was his ‘moderating role in the Mideast peace process.’
German officials have privately voiced deep concern over the possible fall of the Mubarak government and its negative repercussions for the strategic interests for the Zionist regime and the Mideast.
