German FM refusing comment on report about Mubarak exile

By IRNA,

Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle refused to comment on reports about a likely scenario whereby Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could come to Germany for an extended medical checkup as part of plans for Mubarak’s face-saving exit from power.

Talking to German television on Sunday, Westerwelle said his government would ‘not take part in speculations about such a sensitive and important question.’

The Sunday daily Bild am Sonntag quoted German government circles as saying they were ready to allow Mubarak to enter the country for medical treatment.

Mubarak has previously sought medical treatment in Germany, and last March spent three weeks at a clinic in Heidelberg to have his gall bladder removed and also underwent a medical check-up for colon cancer which turned out to be negative.

A close ally of the Mubarak regime for 30 years, Germany has stopped short of calling for the Egyptian leader’s resignation.

Egypt has been hit by major popular unrest, the worst in more than three decades, as millions of Egyptians have demanded nothing less than Mubarak’s ouster.
