Jammu : A police outpost has been removed from a hospital in the Jammu and Kashmir town of Sopore after an outcry from locals despite Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s initial reluctance, official sources said.
The government asked police to “vacate” the premises of Maternity and Child Care Hospital Monday night, following which the security personnel left the premises, the sources said.
The decision came after people started protesting police presence in the hospital premises. The police post was set up in the hospital Saturday to keep the premises safe from militants.
Initially, Abdullah resisted but later he relented and agreed to withdraw the police post.
The hospital premises were considered vulnerable to militant movement and the rebels were suspected to be directing attacks from there, the sources said.
There were attacks on the house of former Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Rasool Kar and two teenaged sisters were killed in the same town by militants.
