New Delhi: Delhi Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna will be chief guest at a Sufi Darbar event to be held on 20th Feb. at India Islamic Cultural Centre in New Delhi. In the wake of the Governor’s Religious Committee playing key role for the demolition of the Noor Masjid of Jangpura, his presence as chief guest at the Sufi event is being protested against.
The protestors have urged Sirajuddin Quraishi, president IICC, to cancel the event. “Lt Governor, Delhi is going to be the chief guest at a Sufi Darbar in IICC, Lodhi Road on 20 Feb. Isn’t he the one responsible for demolishing the Noor Masjid? It is his Religious Committee meeting that reportedly recommended the demolition of Masjid,” says Mazin Khan of The Milli Gazette, English fortnightly.
Besides Noor Masjid case, it is also alleged that the Lt Governor is the one who stalled a magisterial probe into the Batla House ‘encounter’ by refusing to grant permission for the probe, saying that he was satisfied with what the police had told him.
Meanwhile, Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood, president, Zakat Foundation of India, has lent his support to the protest against the L-G being chief guest at the Sufi event. ZFI, through RTI, had exposed the role of the office of the L-G in the demolition. Besides, Manisha Sethi, chief of Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association, has also come out in the support of the campaign.
The Sufi event is being organized by Bahadur Shah Zafar Foundation.
