New Delhi : With its multiplicity of languages, India needs a national institution that is solely dedicated to bringing out translations of regional works and compositions, believes iconic Malayalam poet K Satchidanandan.

The poet, who writes both in Malayalam and English, says a proposal for a national institute for translations has long been pending with the government and something should be urgently done to meet the burgeoning requirement of translations.

“I believe we ought to have at least one institution established by the government directly or through a grant, that is completely dedicated to translations from Indian languages, not only to English but also to other languages,” Satchidanandan told PTI in an interview.

Such a move, he says, will go a long way to encourage writers in regional languages, who need to be nurtured and promoted.
