Ibrahim Dubbashi, deputy ambassador at the Libyan mission to the UN in New York, told reporters that he had information that “genocide” had started in the western region.

“They are attacking the western part,” Dubbashi said. “The Gaddafi message today was to call on collaborators to commit genocide against the people.”

Dubbashi led other Libyan diplomats Monday in denouncing Gaddafi’s crackdown on the protesters. But he said the diplomats were not resigning their posts, saying that they work for the Libyan people and not for any individuals in the government.

“I am calling on the regime to stop killing the people,” Dubbashi said.

He said the statement issued by the council on the situation in Libya was not strong enough, but it was a signal against the military crackdown against protesters.
