Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao, who hails from Telangana, Friday threatened to resign if a bill is not tabled in the budget session of parliament to form a separate Telangana state.
Rao, the minister for endowments, told reporters here that he was also ready to go on hunger strike to demand that the central government should take immediate steps for carving out Telangana state.
He claimed that other public representatives of the Congress from Telangana were also ready to quit if the bill was not tabled in parliament.
Congress MPs and state legislators from Telangana Friday met here and said they had nothing to do with the report of the Srikrishna Committee.
They demanded a bill be tabled in parliament to fulfill the central government’s promise to form Telangana state.
The participants, including MPs Ponnam Prabhakar, G. Sukhender Reddy, Manda Jagannatham and G. Vivek, felt that all Congress leaders should work in tandem to bring pressure on the central government.
The leaders later met Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and demanded immediate withdrawal of police and paramilitary forces from Osmania University and lifting of curbs on media.
The chief minister has agreed to look into the demands but told the leaders that his government has not imposed restrictions on media.
Manda Jagannatham later told reporters that the curbs on media were an attack on the freedom of press.
The MPs said due to restrictions on the media coverage, rumours were being spread about the situation in Osmania University.
