Chandigarh: A total of 83 adult couples who had got married in temples or courts against the wishes of their parents have been provided security in the state’s Hisar district, a police official said Saturday.
The security has been provided to these couples who had got married against the wishes of their respective families in 2010 and feared that they could be attacked by family and community members.
Several areas in Haryana have a recent history of young couples, tying the knot against the wishes of their families or community, being attacked, murdered or ordered to leave their village.
In some cases, where the families have sided with such couples, the community and village courts have ordered the social boycott of the families concerned.
A Hisar police spokesman said Saturday that on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the police had not only set up ‘Suraksha Ghar’ (secure homes) for such adult couples but also took initiative to resolve the issue between the two families through mediation.
He said that security was being provided to runaway couples on the directions of the high court.
He said that though the police tries to get the disputes resolved amicably among the families of such couples, those found taking law in their own hands will be dealt with firmly.
