Jamia to organize Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture on sciences

New Delhi: The Department of Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize the VIII Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture 2010-11 by Professor G Baskaran, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai on “Elementary Particles in Condensed Matter”.

The Lecture is scheduled to be held at 3 PM on Thursday, 13th January 2011 in the Seminar Hall of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia.

Prof. Baskaran received his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1975. He has been closely associated with International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste and Princeton University. Since 1987, he has been with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, where he is now a senior Professor. Prof. Baskaran is also a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1990.

Abdus Salam Memorial Lecture was started by the Department of Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia with the idea of perpetuating the ideas that Salam believed in, namely to encourage education and research in the fundamental sciences. An eminent person of science is invited each year to deliver this lecture. The style of content of the lectures is such as to inspire and convey the excitement of new discoveries, ideas and challenges, said JMI Media Coordinator.

Earlier Abdus Salam Memorial Lectures have been delivered by luminaries such as J. V. Narlikar, Nobel Laureate Gerard’t Hooft, Nobel Laureate D.D. Osheroff, T.V. Ramakrishnan, T. Padmanabhan, K.R. Sreenivasan, Mustansir Barma among others.
