Beijing : Officials in a county in China’s Hebei province have now to prove that they have respect for their parents and in-laws in order to get promotion. Eleven officials were denied promotion after they failed to prove filial reverence.
Authorities in Weixian county decided that officials who didn’t show due respect to their parents should not be promoted, xinhuanet.com reported Tuesday.
Officials will have to prove through their parents, in-laws and spouses that they have respect for their elders before they can be promoted – and any objection from any of the relatives can lead to promotion being withheld.
“If we want to help the public have filial piety, officials should take the lead,” China Daily quoted Qi Jinghai, party secretary of the county, as saying.
At least 11 officials in the county have been denied promotion as they failed to prove their respect towards their parents.
“Officials should show more filial piety to their parents than common people,” said a local resident.
“I would doubt he can do his job well if he doesn’t even treat his parents well.”
