New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil Tuesday said that if parliament does not function properly, people will start losing faith in democratic institutions.
In her message to the nation on the eve of the Republic Day, the president said that one of the biggest achievements of India is its democracy.
“If parliament does not function as it should, there will be erosion of people’s faith in democratic institutions,” she said.
Both the government and opposition have responsibility for the proper functioning of parliament, she said, adding: “All stakeholders should uphold the dignity of parliament.”
The winter session of parliament was washed out due to persistent opposition protests over its demand for a joint parliamentary committee to probe the 2G spectrum scam.
