Davos, Switzerland : President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the world is not yet free from terrorism as shown by the bombing incident in a Moscow airport in Russia on January 24, reports Antara news agency.
“The bombing in the Russian airport three days ago reminded us that terrorism would still haunt us,” he said before the World Economic Forum here on Thursday.
He said extremism and intolerance were increasing and in view of that the way the world look at security issues had to be adjusted.
Right now he said the world is also still facing uncertainty in the economic sector and is still trying to manage global economic recovery as post-crisis situation still continued as shown by debt issue in Europe, budget deficit, restructuring in the financial sector and efforts to create jobs.
The conditions, he said, could create domestic tension in a country which could potentially lead to protectionism.
“Moreover we are also facing rising prices of food and oil. The FAO has also predicted that the price of food had reached a level like in 2008 and it could still increase. The high price of food will not only cause inflation but also poverty and hunger which could lead to social and political chaos,” he said.\
He said the world’s population has now been close to seven billions and would reach nine billions with supply of food, energy, water and other natural resources becoming shorter.
He said the world was undergoing three changes namely the presence of new emerging markets in Asia which has now become the world’s economic growth centre, security threats covering not only violent cases but also cases of natural disasters and diseases and climate change that had to be overcome with a change in the lifestyle and global cooperation including technology sharing.
Susilo said he believed only by global cooperation would various problems facing the world be overcome adding the world could no longer be controlled by a single power.
